Barrett's Esophagus: is the growth of intestinal-type cells in the esophagus. Most cases are caused by chronic acid reflux (GERD) when the the esophagus grows these abnormal cells in response to the chronic acid exposure.
Diagnosis: We diagnose Barrett's esophagus by performing an endoscopy with the patient under sedation.
Treatment: There is currently no cure for Barrett's esophagus. However, if the condition is caused by GERD it may be controlled by treating the acid reflux. People with this condition should have periodic examinations to screen for esophageal cancer.
