Celiac Sprue

Celiac Sprue is a disease which affects the ability of the small intestine to absorb nutrients. People who suffer from this disease cannot eat “gluten” which is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and oats.

  • Diagnosis: Abdominal pain, weight loss, and stunted growth in children are all symptoms of celiac sprue; however, some patients have no symptoms. Since there is a genetic predisposition to celiac sprue, family history is an important factor in making a diagnosis. To make a definitive diagnosis, an endoscopy may also be performed (with the patient under sedation) to directly sample the small bowel.
  • Treatment: Celiac sprue is treated with a gluten-free diet. Although this seems simple, bread, cereals and most prepared foods contain gluten. At Bux-Mont Gastroenterology we will help you plan a diet.
