Cirrhosis of the Liver

Cirrhosis is the build up of scar tissue in the liver which prevents the flow of blood from the intestines, and inhibits the ability of the liver to remove toxins from the body. Cirrhosis can be caused by many factors including:

  • Alcoholism
  • Hepatitis (Especially hepatitis B and C)
  • Inherited diseases that affect the liver and bile duct
  • Prolonged exposure to certain chemicals or drugs (especially when mixed with alcohol)

Diagnosis: At Bux-Mont Gastroenterology we perform blood tests and sometimes liver biopsies to diagnose cirrhosis. Cirrhosis develops slowly over many years. Initially there are only mild symptoms of fatigue and decreased appetite, but as the disease develops fluid retention, jaundice (yellowing of the skin) intestinal bleeding and mental confusion become apparent.

Treatment: Over 90% of all cirrhosis cases are caused by either alcoholism or chronic hepatitis B or C. Cirrhosis caused by alcohol can be prevented by eliminating alcohol consumption.
