Colon Polyps and Cancer

Colon polyps are fleshy, mushroom shaped tumors that can occur in the colon. Although these tumors start out benign, they can become malignant. Colon cancer is one of the most common of all cancers, but there is a 90% survival rate if detected early. Colon cancer can be prevented if the polyps are discovered before they become malignant. Rectal bleeding is a symptom of colon polyps, so please contact us if you have any rectal bleeding.

  • Diagnosis: Everyone over the age of 50 should have periodic examinations and cancer screenings. Individuals with a family history of colon cancer or polyps should have cancer screenings by the age of 40.
  • Treatment: When a polyp is discovered, our doctors will remove it during the colonoscopy. Pathology tests are then performed on the polyp to determine if it is malignant. If cancer is detected, your Bux-Mont physician will discuss treatment options with you. The important thing is to prevent the cancer before it happens, so make sure that you have cancer screenings.
