Crohn's Disease

Crohn's Disease is a disease that causes chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract. People with this disorder can function normally for many years, but may experience cycles of reoccurring pain as the inflammation increases and then subsides for a while. In extreme cases the bowel wall becomes thickened and ulcerated.

  • Diagnosis: Since there is a genetic component to Crohn's disease, family history is important to diagnose the disease. At Bux-Mont Gastroenterology, our doctors usually perform endoscopy exams, laboratory studies and radiological studies to determine if the patient is suffering from Crohn's disease.
  • Treatment: There is no known cure for Crohn's disease; however, in recent years there has been tremendous progress in medications. Today's medications are often successful at relieving symptoms and allowing people to live normal lives. Proper diet and exercise are also important to avoiding complications from the disease. In some cases surgery is required to relieve blockage caused by inflammation or a stricture.
