Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis is a condition where pockets in the wall of the colon, known as “diverticuli,” become infected. This often occurs in the lower colon (sigmoid colon) where muscular pressure cause weak spots in lining of the bowel to form diverticuli. Symptoms include pain in the lower quadrant of the abdomen.

  • Diagnosis: When diverticulitis is suspected your Bux-Mont physician may use a CAT scan to detect the diverticulitis.
  • Treatment: Bux-Mont physicians are usually able to treat diverticulitis by prescribing a special diet and medication. Surgery may be necessary in the event of obstruction, abscess or persistent bleeding.
