Dysphagia

Dysphagia describes a symptom where a patient has difficulty swallowing liquids and food ( Do not confuse dysphagia with the language disorder dypphasia). Related symptoms include “odyophagia” painful swallowing and “globus” in which a patient has a sensation of a lump in the throat. Dysphagia and other related symptoms can be caused by many things including a problem with the muscular valve (sphincter) located between the esophagus and the stomach, a structural problem with the esophagus, or GERD (acid Reflex) and other conditions.

  • Diagnosis: Your Bux-Mont physician will review your medical history and perform tests to determine the root cause of the dysphagia. Your physician may also perform an endoscopy to visually examine your esophagus. .
  • Treatment: Treatment will depend on the underling cause of the dysphagia. Medications or surgery may be the course of treatment.
