GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease)

Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a cause of chronic heartburn. It is often caused when muscular valve (sphincter) located between the esophagus and the stomach malfunctions. Normally the sphincter allows food to travel to the stomach, and keeps stomach acids out of the esophagus. When stomach acids routinely enter the esophagus they erode it. If the condition is not treated the esophagus can be severely damaged and can lead to additional problems including esophagitis, Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer.

  • Treatment: Although your Bux-Mont physician may prescribe medication, diet and lifestyle change may be all that it takes to treat GERD. Patients with GERD should stop smoking, and avoid alcohol and caffeine. They should also avoid eating three hours before bedtime and elevate their heads while sleeping.
