Heartburn (Reflux)

Acid reflux or “heartburn” occurs when stomach acids flow into your esophagus. Unlike your stomach, the esophagus does not have a protective lining, therefore the acids cause irritation. Nearly every person experiences heartburn occasionally. If it occurs frequently (twice a week or more) it may cause a more serious condition called GERD.

  • Diagnosis: We evaluate the seriousness of the heartburn and associated symptoms. If the condition occurs often, your Bux-Mont physician may perform an endoscopy.
  • Treatment: Diet and lifestyle change are often all that it takes to eliminate heartburn. Patients with heartburn can often alleviate the problem by avoiding things that upset their stomach, such as caffeine and fatty foods. It is also a good idea to avoid activity just after eating and to stop eating three hours before bedtime. For chronic heartburn, your Bux-Mont physician may also prescribe medication.
