Helicobacter pylori

Even though this stomach infection is not contagious, researchers believe that it is one of the most common infections in the world. People usually become infected when they eat contaminated food. The Helicobacter pylori bacteria damage the mucus layer that protects the stomach from the strong stomach acids, making it likely that patients develop ulcers.

  • Diagnosis: The symptoms of Helicobacter pylori infection are usually not noticeable. It is only after the development of an ulcer that the infection may be suspected. Your Bux-Mont physician may perform a simple blood test or stool test to check for exposure to this infection, or perform an endoscopy to check for an active infection.
  • Treatment: When Helicobacter pylori infection is found, your Bux-Mont physician will most likely prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection.
