Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas. The inflammation can be caused by many factors including heavy consumption of alcohol, gallstones (gallbladder disease), trauma (such as a car accident), certain medications, viral infections and heredity. The main symptoms of pancreatitis are fever, vomiting and severe pain in the abdomen.

  • Diagnosis: The first step in diagnosing pancreatitis is to perform a blood test to determine if pancreatic enzymes are elevated. An ultrasound or CAT scan may also be used to determine if the pancreas is swollen.
  • Treatment: The first phase of treatment is to treat any other conditions, such as gallbladder disease, that may be inflaming the pancreas. Bowel rest and medications may also be prescribed by your Bux-Mont physician.
