Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative Colitis (colitis) is a chronic disease that causes areas of the colon to become inflamed and ulcerated (open sores), which leads to severe abdominal pain and diarrhea. Although the disease is chronic, a patient may go for long periods of time between bouts. At the present, the cause of disease is not fully understood, although heredity may play a part.

  • Diagnosis: People with colitis have an increased risk of developing colon cancer, so it is important for them to have regular cancer screenings. Please contact us for more information.
  • Treatment: If you have colitis, your Bux-Mont physician can prescribe medications that will help to control inflammation and heal ulceration. Regular cancer screenings are also important to detect colon cancer.
